Overview
Studio Bo is an animation and games company based in Cape Town, South Africa, founded by Richard Bolland, with Jake Waldron and Simon van Wyk as co-directors. It began in 2014 making 2D animated explainer videos and now offers explainers, motion design, e-learning, TV ads, medical explainers, game development and interactive Rive animation, with work for brands including Belimo, Virgin Red and The Life You Can Save.
In 2023 the studio started Studio Bo Games to bring its playful visual style and quirky sense of humour to a larger audience. Since then it has built prototypes across several genres and developed games and interactive experiences for product launches and e-learning. Its first full mobile game, Idle Sands, was selected for Google Play's Indie Games Fund in Africa, and the studio is also preparing its first children's show, Animal Therapy.
Beyond its client work, the studio helped start New Hope SA, an organisation working on pathways out of homelessness, and funds a significant portion of it.
